Danbury firefighters attacked the first fire around 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 9 when the department was alerted to a kitchen fire at 135 Main St., at the Igreja Evangelica Bethel Church.

Upon arrival, firefighters safely evacuated all occupants and found a kitchen fire in one of the commercial units that, due to the large size of the space, called for a second alarm, said James Gagliardo, spokesman for the department.

As the fire continued to grow, a third alarm was sounded to bring relief personnel to assist in an extensive overhaul operation, Gagliardo said.

Firefighters were able to hold the fire to one unit but reported heavy smoke damage throughout the building.

The second three-alarm fire took place around 9:30 a.m., Thursday, March 10 when the department was notified of smoke coming from a building at 68 Virginia Avenue Towne Summit, Gagliardo said.

Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke coming from the roofline of a large eight-unit townhouse building, he added.

A second alarm was activated immediately bringing additional firefighters to the scene.

Crews stretched a line to the fire unit and were faced with high heat and smoke throughout the unit, Gagliardo said. Initial crews located the fire on the third floor and knocked down the bulk of the fire with one hose line.

One firefighter was transported to an area hospital for evaluation which escalated the incident to a third alarm, Gagliardo said.

The fire was under control at approximately 10: 15 a.m.

The Danbury Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of both fires which are undetermined at this time.
